Though there are some external blu-ray burners out now, the price of blank disc's is still too high to consider them. At $69.99 this drive is cheaper by around $30 than the next choice, and only $30 more than the most popular external DVD drive. The drive does require 2 USB ports to operate; one for power and one for data.I've tested the drive on Windows and Linux and it shows up on both, as expected. All optical drives are simple I/O devices, there is no reason why it wouldn't show up on anything. It is down to your operating system and installed software to decide what to do with them. The drives identifies itself as "BD-ROM Slimtype BD E DS4E1S EP58". A quick google identifies the manufacturer as Philips/Lite-On. I've had Lite-On drives before and never had any problems.
